Meet Rebecca our 5th Engineering Apprentice. She has been with us for a good few years now but didn’t join us to enter into the world of machiningOh no, it was just going to be just a temp job until she figured out what she wanted to do for a career.

So now a little history. Fresh from completing her A Levels Rebecca joined us in the sales office to help us out during the summer, 2 months turned to 6, then 10, and she was still here! Rebecca was becoming a brilliant sales assistant to the sales team and she did a great job. However, she realised that a desk was not for her and when she saw us starting to look for our next Engineering Apprentice, she asked the MD if she could be considered to enter our Engineering Apprenticeship program.

We don’t think we’ve seen our MD Tony Worsley so happy. It must have taken him less than a second to agree to that and thus Rebecca started her Engineering Apprenticeship with Elder Engineering.

Rebecca was enrolled in our local college and began studying a BTEC L3 Diploma in Advance Mechanical Engineering, which was her main course, leading on to her selected modules L3 diploma in Advance Manual Machining and Engineering Machinist CNC. This is a three-year course which she completed with aplomb.

With the BTEC L3 Diploma under her belt, Rebecca wanted to take it further and this year started a degree in Product Design and Design Engineering at London South Bank University, which Elder is more than happy to support her with.

During her studies and time at Elder, Rebecca has had the opportunity to learn many different aspects of machining, she started on our lathes learning how to read drawings and machine rods to turned parts. After spending time and gaining experience and knowledge from our experienced machinists, Rebecca moved on to our Milling section and as she is a little lacking in the height department, had her Elder made a special step in tow which allows her to actually reach the machines (Machine manufacturers take note!!). Here she gained a wealth of knowledge from our previous apprentice Peter Wells who taught Rebecca the skills of programming, tool setting and how to machine a part using 3, 4 and 5 Axis mills.

With all this on-the-job training she still has to maintain her degree coursework and is currently working on a project using corrugated cardboard to advertise an environmentally friendly toiletries bag. She can use the skills she had gained from her working time to put this into place along with knowledge of how it works in the environment it will be exposed to.

Following on from completing her BTEC L3 Diploma, Rebecca chose to work in the turning department, where she is now a valuable part of the Elder team tackling all aspects of Multi-Axis, Multi Spindle Lathes and also not in need of her step!

What does Rebecca feel about Elder?

“I have always felt that Elder Engineering have always supported and encouraged me to learn and push boundaries and the degree was in the plans as soon as I started my B-Tec. I want to be confident in the skills that I am learning and be able to teach the skills I have been taught to others. It’s important to me that people don’t feel pressured to go into an environment by being pushed, break the mould, do something bold and unexpected./p>

A comment from our MD Tony Worsley

“When Rebecca joined it took her no time at all to fit in with the team and she settled into her temp job in Sales with ease. The day she stepped into my office to ask to move from the sales desk and into our Apprenticeship scheme I was over the moon. It was great to see someone wanting to be a bigger part of our industry after seeing what we did in the factory and all of the projects we are involved in. I am pleased that we can back her to gain her degree and I know the team here is behind her all the way.
She is currently an important part of our turning section but is still learning day by day. Always has a smile on her face and always has a positive outlook on the tasks at hand. At Elder, we like to put a lot of effort into showcasing our industry to the younger generations. With Rebecca’s teaching skills from Sea Cadets, she is brilliant at showing our school work experience placements what we do and how we do it./p>

Elder Engineering (Herts) Ltd have always seen the value of on-the-job training and the benefits that a modern apprenticeship can bring, not only to the company but for the long-term future of our industry. As a result, in 2012 we introduced an Apprenticeship scheme and working closely with our local college, Oaklands in Welwyn Garden City, were able to put together a programme covering many aspects of machining and mechanical engineering.

As a result of this scheme, we now have some very skilled members in our team who are now bringing their own ideas for continuous improvement into our business.

Rebecca initially joined our team as a temp in our Sales department in order to gain some work experience following on from full time education. When we started to put the advert together looking for 2019’s intake she jumped at the opportunity and asked if we would consider her for a place. This was fantastic news!! Without hesitation we welcomed her on board full time, she cleared her desk and started her apprenticeship in Mechanical and Production Engineering.

Some words from Rebecca

“Elder has always supported and given me a variety of opportunities to learn and develop my knowledge in machining. I feel I have a large number of people within in the company supporting and guiding me.

The end goal I would like is to become fully trained in CNC Turning, Milling and Programming, I would like to use these skills to program and create a wide variety of complex parts, I would also like to inspire and pass on my own knowledge to future generations who want to come into engineering./p>

Some words from our MD Tony Worsley

“One of the most enjoyable aspects of my job is seeing the skills of our apprentices develop over time, especially seeing some of our ex-apprentices now teaching the new ones.

As an apprentice trained Toolmaker myself, I have had the benefits that can be gained from an apprenticeship and all the knowledge and tricks that those skilled machinists passed onto me. It is a great way to learn skills on the job while also gaining qualifications for future employment.

It is a real pleasure, as it is with all our apprentices, to see Rebecca now progressing in her second year. She is learning very quickly and the team at Elder are enjoying passing their knowledge onto her with some laughs along the way. She is already proficient in Manual Turning, Milling and Bench work and is now into programming our Doosan lathes including C and Y axis operations. All this, while also keeping on top of the college work than goes hand in hand with the practical aspects.

In the future Elder’s aim to continue training and investing in new talent for the future. It is an important part of our industry and something that I feel we all need to continue to invest in.

1980 saw the formation of Elder Engineering (Herts) Ltd by husband and wife team Christine and Terry Flain. Christine with her office experience and accounting flair and Terry supported by an engineering plastics apprenticeship with market leader Polypenco Ltd. Post apprenticeship led to Terry being given opportunities for obtaining considerable design and sales experience. Both wanted to be in charge of their own destiny whilst raising a young family. The Flain’s principle of not wanting to borrow money in case they could not repay should markets dry up meant slow growth in those early days. Money earned stayed mainly in the business and the family got by as best they could.

1989 saw gradual growth that justified taking on small premises of 1000 sq. ft. in Welwyn Garden City along with the purchase of a new Wadkin saw. It was at this time that Polypenco approached their ex apprentice to become one of 26 specialist engineering plastic distributors throughout the UK.

A successful Polypenco/Elder distributor partnership followed with engineering and high performance plastic sales taking off. The next key products to come on board were high performance tapes culminating in a distributor partnership with manufacturer St Gobain.

One thing led to another and Elder had moved into 5000 sq. ft. of premises again in WGC. Such additional space allowed for continued growth and the start of a machine shop.
Since 2003, Elder has enjoyed working in the delightful 10,000 sq. ft. building that it finds itself in today. Accredited to Aerospace AS9100 Rev D for its state of the art machine shop, tapes division and other specialist products, Elder has become a market leader within its own right.

Management has evolved with Tony Worsley now the MD accompanied by a dynamic workforce working alongside him. Christine and Terry remain an active part of Elder and continue to express the same passion for Tony and his team to drive the company to the next level.

Guess what, to date, the company still has not borrowed a penny. If we can’t afford it, we haven’t bought it. Slower growth it maybe, but no debts and solid stability gives a greater reassurance for all of the Elder team and its supplier base.

Here is to the next 40 years of steady growth and security for the whole team at Elder.
